Things to know about the coefficient of friction

The positional stability of a penetration-free mounting system on flat roofs is achieved by its own weight, module weight and additional ballast. The prerequisite for installation is therefore that the building has sufficient load-bearing reserves and that the roof structure is suitable.

A significant influence on the positional stability of this type of construction is the interaction between the roof cladding and the building protection mat, as well as between the mounting system and the building protection mat, which are described by a coefficient of static friction or coefficient of friction. The coefficient of friction is included 1:1 in the structural analysis. It is therefore necessary to determine or verify the coefficient of friction on site.

Test set: friction coefficient determination

  • Simple and accurate determination of the coefficient of friction with few measuring points

  • Test weight, spring tension scale and test pieces Buatenschutzmatte or Mat S/V

  • With the help of this tool the value can be determined on bitumen, foil, concrete, gravel and green roofs

Testing the coefficient of friction

The coefficient of friction, also known as the friction coefficient (formula symbol µ), is a dimensionless measure of the frictional force in relation to the contact force between two bodies. Coefficient of friction µ = F : G
