Largest PV system opened on an English shopping centre

30/11/2017 West Yorkshire, England

Working closely with EvoEnergy, K2 Solar Mounting Solutions has developed a project-specific substructure to equip the roofs of Landsec’s ‘White Rose shopping centre in Leeds with a 783 kWp PV system. It is the largest solar installation on a UK shopping centre!

The special aluminium frames (Triangle System) were fixed to the roof sheet with the K2 Kalzip clamp and elevated with the Ultralight SolidRail as base rail and the Light SolidRail as module support rail. The K2 Add-Ons were used to attach the modules to the rails. This supported the modules and allowed clamping on the long side and landscape orientation.

The plant is expected to produce more than 680 MWh per year. This covers about 39% of the daily needs of the shopping centre, which requires energy mainly for indoor and outdoor lighting, air conditioning and air supply. The ‘White Rose shopping centre will thus already reduce its carbon footprint by 240 tonnes (grid intensity 2017) in the first year. This is roughly equivalent to the amount of 40 cars that would no longer be on the road.

‘The particular challenge with this project was installing modules that faced south and had a 15° elevation, as well as taking into account the east-west curvature of the roof. We divided the area into small sections to better accommodate the curvature of the roof, says Ben Gosling, Technical Manager at K2 Solar Mounting Solutions, the UK subsidiary of K2 Systems.
